First badge has a two-piece construction, in bronze gilt with blue and white enamels, illustrating a zeppelin bearing the inscription "GOTT STRAFE ENGLAND", measuring 35 mm (w) x 15.2 mm (h), horizontal pinback. Second badge in silvered and gilt bronze, obverse illustrating a ship sinking in the waves, with an all-seeing eye and the inscription "GOTT STRAFE ENGLAND" above, reverse illustrating a 1914 Iron Cross framed by an open-ended wreath of laurel leaves and oak leaves, inscribed "GOTT MIT UNS" above, measuring 25.7 mm in diameter, horizontal pinback. Third badge had a two-piece construction, in bronze gilt with red, yellow, black and blue enamels, illustrating a fouled anchor fronted by a life preserver, inscribed "GOTT STRAFE ENGLAND" within the preserver, marked "GES. G." (Gesetzlich Geschützt) on the reverse, measuring 21.5 mm (w) x 26 mm (h), horizontal pinback. Intact enamels, extremely fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
