(Avso Griller Briefbeschwerer). Constructed of gilded bronze, consisting of a circular ribbed base, bearing an etched inscription of “AVISO GRILLE”, topped by a German national eagle perched on a wreathed mobile swastika, the reverse with a screw and washer, unmarked, measuring 72 mm (w) x 55 mm (h), minor loss of finish evident, in overall near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The Aviso Grille was built by Blohm & Voss and commissioned on 19 May 1935 as the official German state yacht. The Grille served in this capacity until the outbreak of the war, when she was reconstituted as a minelayer and training ship. In 1948, she was purchased by a Lebanese businessman and relocated to Beirut. During the Israeli War of Independence, Israeli intelligence received information that the ship would be utilized for hostilities by Egyptian forces. An Israeli special forces team disabled the ship with limpet mines on 29 November 1948. The ship was repaired, but soon sold for scrap, later being dismantled in New Jersey in 1951.
