Germany, Luftwaffe. A Canteen with Matching Bread-bag, c. 1942
A Luftwaffe canteen and bread-bag, the canteen constructed of oval-shaped aluminum, maker marked “SMM42”,screw thread on the neck, curved on the reverse to allow for wearing around the waist, aluminum cap, the canteen encased in a brown wool cover with four metal snap closures on the left side, single brown smooth-finished leather straps on the front and back, the straps joined together by an aluminum post on the bottom,an additional strap wrapped around the neck and secured in place by a buckle, a magnetic metal clip riveted in place on the reverse strap for belt attachment, the end of this same strap attached to an aluminum post rising from the centre of the aluminum cap, inclusive of its aluminum mess-tin, marked “SMM42” as well and fastened to the canteen via a leather strap that folds over the tin, measuring . The bread-bag, constructed of gray cotton with aluminum and black metal hardware, as well as three matching buttons (the fourth has been period replaced), measuring 300 mm (w) x 254 mm (h), used examples but in overall very fine condition.
