Germany, Luftwaffe. A Miniature Dress Bayonet Letter Opener, by Robert Schmidt
(Luftwaffe Brieföffner). A very well-preserved Luftwaffe miniature dress bayonet letter opener, measuring 235 mm in length with the scabbard on. The blade measures 135 mm (l) x 15 mm (w) and is constructed of nickel-silver plated metal, acid-engraved on the obverse with “ROBERT SCHMIDT, MASCHINENFABRIK & METALLGIESSEREI, BERLIN N.W., HEIDENAU”. The tip is in a semi-sharpened condition, while the edges of the blade are blunted. The blade fits neatly through the upper crossguard, itself constructed of nickel-silver plating, which in turn sits flush with the black bakelite and metal handle, held together by two magnetic metal rivets. The upper crossguard has a single hooked quillon, while the bakelite handle bears an obverse magnetic metal Luftwaffe-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika. The lower crossgard, similarly constructed of magnetic metal, forms a hook complemeting the quillon, facilitating an even grip. The scabbard is constructed of magnetic metal which retains most of its original black paint, and has a padded felt throat to mitigate scratching to the blade during insertion and extraction. There is minor loss of plating to the nickel-silver features, and fatigue to the bakelite handle, but the dagger is in an otherwise better than very fine condition.
