Germany, Wehrmacht. An Afrika Korps Trench Art Silver Cigarette Case from Obergefreiter Werner Weber, by Lutz & Wess
(Afrikakorps Zigarettenetui). Constructed of silver, the exterior of the lid bearing a carefully hand-etched map of North Africa with the locations of key battles during the campaign highlighted, situated above an Afrika Korps logo in the form of a palm tree defaced by a mobile swastika, flanked by an inscription of “OBGFR. WERNER WEBER, 20. 10. 42 MASSA MATRUK, 14. 5. 43 TUNIS”, the interior featuring an elasticized band to securely hold the contents in place, bearing an additional hand-etched inscription of “1. ADVENT 1948, BETTY”, closing with a functional spring catch with exterior stud release, the stud stamped on the reverse with a crown and crescent moon indicating German manufacture, a silver content number of “835S”, and the hallmark of Lutz & Weiss, Pforzheim, measuring 80 mm (w) x 70 mm (l), weighing 52.6 grams, in extremely fine condition.
