A Fine Period Oil Painting of a Imperial German U-Boat at Sea

This is a fine and highly detailed painting of a first war German submarine (U-Boot der Kaiserlichen Marine) sailing at sea, painted in oil on a stretched canvas and framed in a wooden oak frame. The submarine depicted with some of its crew standing on the bridge with two guns, one on the bow, and the other on the stern of the ship, as well as the flag of the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine). It is sailing in moderately wavy water, splashing over parts of the bow and with visible raised waves towards the bottom left corner of the frame, within a bay or near a coastline, with land visible in the distance along the horizon as well as towards the left of the painting. The atmosphere of the scene is suspenseful, due to the dimly lit tan-coloured evening sky. The painting is signed by the artist with “MK” towards the bottom right corner. It is framed in a thick chocolate-coloured oak frame, with a ribbed border along the painting, a bowed moulding, and a twirled patterned edge. The painting is secured to the frame via a wooden board nailed to the frame. It features a paper applique of the maker, reading “Gappan - Carl G. Oncken’s Hofkunsthandlung Gegründed 1867 Oldenburg - Werkstätte für stilgerechte bildereinrahmung”, in addition to a metal hook screwed to the reverse of the frame for hanging. The frame measures 70 cm x 52.5 cm, with the painting measuring 50.8 cm x 33.6 cm. The painting is overall well preserved, with some warping in the canvas, as well as a light crack in the canvas towards the centre right, both caused by exposure to moisture/humidity/ The frame is chipped towards the top right of the edge, with the four panels of the frame slightly gapped due to shrinkage of the wood from age. Overall very fine condition. (Please contact for Shipping Costs)
