Germany, Luftwaffe. An HJ Flak Helper’s Cap
This is a HJ Flak Helper’s cap, uniquely with non-regulation Luftwaffe insignia. The cap is constructed of coarse grey-blue wool with fold down panels and skirt arms with squared ends. The panels are secured to the front of the cap via two small pebbled grey metal (magnetic) buttons. Towards the front are two Luftwaffe insignia (previously lightly cleaned), a machine embroidered Luftwaffe eagle constructed of greyish-white threading on a Luftwaffe grey wool backer, and a machine woven tri-colour patted cockade - uniquely, HJ Flak Helpers were issued caps such as these with a single HJ diamond crafted out of red, black, and white machine embroidery. However, HJ boys, although breaking regulation, often attached Luftwaffe insignia to their caps to appear like more legitimate Luftwaffe staff. This explains why the insignia appear crowded on the front of the cap (the cockade is covered entirely by the skirt arms and buttons). The outside brim of the cap is reinforcement with cardboard, but broken in multiple piece, still giving it a proper stiff look, but feeling uneven. The interior of the cap is lined in in woven celluloid, discoloured from a silvery colour to a shade of green due to wear and perspiration. The cap measures 250 mm x 175 mm; in very fine condition.
