Germany, Heer. An M42 Wehrmacht Stahlhelm with a M31 Bread Bag Strap
A no-decal Wehrmacht Heer (Army) steel helmet, crafted out of a sheet of molybdenum steel (magnetic) with its original apple-green paint on the interior and exterior of the helmet. It features stamped air vents and a crude, non-rolled/crimped rim along the entire helmet, making this a signature M42 style helmet. The interior features an eight-panel brown leather liner, each with five stamped ventilation holes, and an additional hole at the tip for the drawstring. The drawstring is constructed of embroidered white string, and appears original to the helmet. The chin strap is constructed of blackened leather, with its original metal hardware, and is securely fastened to the metal frame within the helmet. The underside of the skirt is stamped “E 2231”, without any other legible markings. This helmet also features an added M31 bread bag strap, that is currently tightly wrapped around the exterior of the helmet. It consists of a 29 mm wide olive-green cotton woven fabric, with black leather tabs on both ends, and magnetic clips on both ends. The helmet measures 276 mm x 234 mm. The exterior apple-green paint is reasonably well preserved with obvious, yet subtle, signs of wear throughout. The interior paint of the helmet shows wear, including the leather liner, with three leather tabs partially ripped, and showing discolouration from use. The frame remains firmly attached to the interior of the helmet via its attachment clips. Overall better than very fine condition.
