(Heer Stahlhelm M40). A well-preserved Heer single decal M40 steel helmet, constructed of a magnetic metal molybdenum steel shell. The exterior retains most of its original matte dark green painted finish. Three protruding rivets are distributed around the circumference of the shell, securing in place the interior features. It is flanked on each side by an integrated ventilation hole. On the left side, the helmet retains a mostly intact decale consisting of a black shield overlaid by a silvered Heer-style german national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 34 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The rim is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge. The interior retains a magnetic metal ring, fully circumscribing the circumference, which secures in place a brown leather liner. Eight leather fingers emanate from the liner, each perforated with five ventilation holes and a single hole at the top, the latter retaining an original drawstring. Also affixed to the ring are two magnetic metal buttons which feature an original two-piece black leather chinstrap, adjusted with a functional aluminum buckle. Stamped onto the inner brim is a maker’s code of “Q64” for the firm of F.W. Quist, Esslingen, and an additional mark of “478”. Stamped onto the liner in green ink is a size mark of “58”. The helmet measures 230 mm (w) x 280 mm (l) x 145 mm (h). Some issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include loss of paint, scratching, and oxidation of the shell, as well as deterioration of the leather features, which includes severance of one of the chinstraps. It is in an overall very fine condition.
