Germany, Heer. An EM/NCO’s Overseas Service Cap, by Robert Lubstein
(Heer Schiffchen). A very well-preserved Heer EM/NCO’s overseas service cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It is fully surrounded by fold-down side panels, scalloped at the front, reinforced along the top edge with dual rows of machine stitching. The crown is flanked by ventilation holes both reinforced with grey-painted zink grommets. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a field-grey backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle insignia measures 52 mm (w) x 26 mm (h) overall. Stitched onto the panel directly beneath the eagle is an additional insignia consisting of a field-grey rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered tri-colour cockade, measuring 34 mm (w) x 34 mm (h). The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece grey cotton-blended liner, stamped on the left side with a partially-legible maker’s mark of “ROBERT LUBSTEIN, BERLIN”, above a manufacture date of “1940” and a size mark of “59”. The maker’s mark is flanked on the left by a stamped Wehrmacht depot mark. The cap measures approximately 290 mm (l) x 125 mm (h) when folded on a flat surface. Minor material fatigue consistent with light wear is evidence to the insignia and wool, but the cap remains in an overall extremely fine condition.
