Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Kriegsmarine Battleship Scharnhorst Seaman’s Cap

(Schiffermütze). An extremely well preserved Seaman’s cap from the Battleship Scharnhorst, constructed of a black wool exterior with rayon interior liner. The peak of the cap features a 64 mm (w) x 27 mm (h) die-stamped gilded brass pin in the form of a Kriegsmarine-style German national eagle with wreathed mobile swastika. Directly below is a multi-coloured brass cockade with a red felt centre, measuring 24 mm in diameter. The tally ribbon is constructed of black rayon with machine-embroidered lettering in fine gold-coloured threading inscribed “Schlachtschiff Scharnhorst” (“Battleship Scharnhorst”). The interior features a 45 mm-thick tan-coloured leather sweatband, securely held in place by two rows of stitching and stamped on the interior with a Kriegsmarine logo. The exterior measures approximately 250 mm in diameter, while the interior of the cap measures approximately 180 mm in diameter with a depth of 88 mm. Minor wear to the eagle pin and cockade is evident, along with some soiling of the sweat band, but the cap presents in an otherwise better than extremely fine condition.
