Germany, Luftschutz. An Air Raid Protection “Gladiator” Helmet, c.1939
(Luftschutzwarndiensthelm). Instituted 1939. Constructed of steel (magnetic) in the shape of the traditional “Gladiator” style, with its original dark blue exterior, with a winged Luftschutz insignia applique in silver on the front. It consists of a large dome, with a large two-piece brim around the helmet. It features two clusters of seven small air vents on either side, with a smooth finished edge along the entire helmet. The interior is painted in matching dark blue, featuring a headliner constructed of three sheets of white faux leather, each with two flaps that are punctured at the tips to allow a drawstring to be threaded through them. The headliner is attached to an interior rail that is attached to the helmet itself via four rivets, also securing the two-piece blackened leather chin strap to the helmet. The interior is marked “RL2-39/11” and is stamped in white (not legible). It measures 267 mm (w) x 303 mm (h). A worn example, with light scratches on the exterior and interior, with a heavily soiled interior liner and light cracks in the chin strap. In good condition.
