Germany, Luftwaffe. A Fur & Leather Winter Cap, 1943
(Pelzmütze). A winter cap constructed of multi-panel patchwork, whitened sheepskin with the natural hide to the exterior and the white sheep’s wool to the interior, the cap features fold down side and back panels with the panels held in position at the top of the cap by a thread loop and a corresponding button, the fold down side panels have a small circular cut-out with a corresponding, overlapping horizontal “U” shaped closure panel with a single, brown painted sheet metal closure snap to each, the front features an embroidered Luftwaffe-style eagle and cockade, the inside shows a fabric tag stamped “1943” and below “0 / 1316 / 0014” and the size “55,” the cap displays standard use and age, cracking of the leather with small tears and one significant tear on the right side, measures 20.2 cm (w) x 24.5 cm (l) x 14 cm (h), and is in overall good condition.
