Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Overseas Field Cap
(Luftwaffe Fliegermütze). This is an extremely well-preserved Luftwaffe officer’s overseas field cap, constructed of ribbed dark grey wool. The cap is surrounded by a fold-down panel, the top of which is trimmed with a band of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire piping, indicating that the cap was upgraded when the owner received a promotion. The peak of the cap is adorned with an insignia in the form of a machine-embroidered, silver-grey Luftwaffe-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 70 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Underneath the eagle is a machine-embroidered tri-colour cockade measuring 22 mm in diameter. The interior of the cap is fully lined by with a slate-grey cotton liner with a faint size stamp of “56”. The cap is otherwise unmarked and measures approximately 276 mm (l) x 120 mm (h) as folded. There is some fatigue evident to the wool around the headband, but the cap is in an otherwise near extremely fine condition.
