Germany, NSKK. A I Pattern National Socialist Motor Corps (NSKK) Crash Helmet
(NSKK Sturzhelm). This is a first pattern National Socialist Motor Corps (NSKK) Crash Helmet, constructed of a molded, smooth, blackened, reinforced leather helmet with raised, padded, protective bars running horizontally around the helmet's bottom edge with another protective bar running from front to back over the crown top. The helmet has dual ventilation grommets on each side. The peak of the helmet has a first pattern NSKK-style German national eagle, firmly held in its correct position, clutching a wreathed, black-enameled mobile swastika. The helmet has a short blackened leather visor stitched to the front, as well as stitched, reinforced, textured side and rear fold-down panels. The right side panel has a chinstrap with a blackened magnetic metal buckle meeting two holes stamped into its left counterpart, allowing for an adjustable fit. Each panel also has a vertical half moon-shaped ear cut-out with stitched-on closure flaps, allowing for protection without compromising the wearer’s hearing. The interior of the helmet has a tan-coloured leather liner with seven fingers joined together by a leather string looped through holes stamped into the top of each. The helmet is unmarked and measures 209 mm (w) x 255 mm (l) x 149 mm (h). Age-appropriate wear and fatigue to the leather is evident throughout, but the helmet presents in an otherwise near very fine condition.
