Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Infantry EM/NCO’s Visor Cap
(Waffen-SS Schirmmütze für Männer der Infanterie). A Waffen-SS Infantry EM/NCO’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey whipcord wool. The cap features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a black doeskin wool cap band. The former is trimmed along both the top and bottom edges with bands of white wool piping, while an additional band of identical piping lines the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak of the cap is a silvered zink insignia consisting of a SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle insignia measures 70 mm (w) x 32 mm (h) and retains all three of its reverse attachment prongs. Pinned onto the centre of the cap band just underneath the eagle is an additional insignia consisting of a first-pattern, Danziger-style SS Totenkopf, constructed of silvered feinzink. Retaining both of its reverse attachment prongs, the Totenkopf measures 35 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). The cap is flanked on each side by blackened magnetic metal rivets set into the cap band, in turn securing in place a two-piece black leather chinstrap. Joined together in the centre by a blackened magnetic metal loop, the strap is adjusted with dual functional magnetic metal buckles. When not in use, the chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in matte black on the obverse, and in brown on the reverse. A brown leather sweatband measuring 40 mm in width surrounds the lower interior, and is secured in place with machine stitching. A light brown rayon-blended liner fully encompasses the interior, with a transparent plastic moisture guard stitched onto the crown. Underneath the guard, the liner bears a black ink size stamp of “54 ½”. Issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include extensive mothing throughout the wool, some loss of finish to the insignia, and soiling and fatigue of the sweatband and interior liner. This experienced visor cap is in an overall fair condition.
