Germany, Luftwaffe. A Fallschirmjäger M38 Single-Decal Steel Helmet

(Luftwaffe Stahlhelm M38 für Fallschirmjäger). An extremely well-preserved Fallschirmjäger M38 steel helmet, constructed of magnetic sheet steel and retaining its original apple-green painted finish. Four hollow-channel rivets are distributed across the circumference, and include two at the reverse and one at each side. The exterior features complete with a single decal in the form of a white Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, with features highlighted in black, measuring 66 mm (w) x 36 mm (h). The rim is fully crimped, giving the helmet a smooth and uniform edge. On the interior, a zink band fully encompasses the circumference, securely held in place by the aforementioned exterior rivets. Set over top of the band is a fully intact dark grey neoprene pad, which covers the entirety of the crown and descends in strips to the bottom of the band, providing maximum comfort for the wearer during use. The pad in turn bears an intact two-piece light brown leather liner, held together by a row of heavy hand stitching and perforated with 12 large ventilation holes. Emanating from the sides and reverse is an intact multi-piece black leather Y-strap style chinstrap, adjusted with a functional magnetic metal buckle and two functional magnetic metal snap buttons. The helmet bears a number of marks, with the liner featuring black ink size stamps indicating a head size of “61” and a shell size of “71”, a Reichsbetriebsnummer of “0/1305/0293” indicating manufacture in Litzmannstadt (now Łódź Poland), and a handwritten owner’s name of “KLINGENSTEIN” (Also hand scratched into interior helmet shell). An additional number of “4081” is stamped on the interior of the shell. The helmet measures 220 mm (w) x 262 mm (l) x 130 mm (h). Minor issues consisting with age and use are evident, and includes some scratching and oxidation of the shell, some deterioration of the exterior decale, and material fatigue of the leather elements. This otherwise intact and personalized example is in an overall extremely fine condition.
