A 1941 Army (Heer) Officer's Side Cap by Willy Sprengpfeil, Hamburg
Constructed with an Army green wool exterior, fold down panels with downward scallops to the front and forward sides, zinc eyelets on either side both of which are finished in olive green, with two rising peaks forming a valley between the two, the edges of the peaks and the scalloped edge of the fold panel at the front trimmed in silver-coloured piping in a thatched pattern, wrapped around white cord cores. Sewn in place on the peak on the front is an Army (Heer) eagle in gray and forest green machine embroidery, illustrating a right-facing spread-winged eagle, its talons gripping a wreathed swastika below, machine embroidered tri-colour cockade on a forest green background sewn in place on the fold down flap below the eagle. The interior is lined in a brownish-green cotton, marked on the dome in black ink with the maker "WILLY SPRENGPFEIL MÜTZENFABRIK HAMBURG 19", size marked "56" and dated "1941. The cap measures 100 x 270 mm, with evidence of mothing throughout on the exterior, the zinc eyelet on the left side experiencing chipping in the olive green finish, intact stitching, better than very fine.
