Germany, Heer. A Flak/Artillery Officer’s Visor Cap, by Peter Küpper
(Heer Schirmmütze für Offizier der Flaktruppe/Artillerie). A very well-preserved Heer Flak/Artillery Officer’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey whipcord wool. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a dark green doeskin wool cap band. Both the top and bottom of the cap band are trimmed with red wool piping, while an additional band of identical piping fully trimmed the edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is an aluminum insignia consisting of a Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. Measuring 65 mm (w) x 25 mm (h), the eagle insignia retains both of its reverse attachment prongs. Stitched onto the cap band just underneath the eagle is an insignia consisting of a padded dark green wool base bearing a central non-ferrous metal tricolour cockade, set within a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire oak leaf wreath. The cap band insignia measures 65 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). The cap is flanked on each side by pebbled zink buttons, securing in place a decorative chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. Adjusted with two sliding knots of identical construction, the chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, which is finished in a matte black on the obverse and in light brown on the reverse. The interior is fully surrounded by a light brown leather sweatband measuring 45 mm in width, perforated with an array of ventilation holes near the forehead. A golden yellow rayon liner encompasses the interior, with a transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard stitched onto the crown. The moisture guard bears a black ink maker’s mark of “PEKÜRO” for the firm of Peter Küpper, Ronsdorf-Wuppertal. Inserted into the guard is a paper name tag bearing a handwritten surname of “WEBER”. A handwritten initial “W” flanked the left side of the guard. The cap measures approximately 255 mm (w) x 270 mm (l) x 165 mm (h). Soiling and material fatigue consistent with age and field use are evident to both the interior and exterior, and the cap is in an overall better than very fine condition.
