Germany, Heer. An EM/NCO’s M42 Overseas Cap
(Heer Schiffchen M42 für Männer/Unteroffizier). An extremely well-preserved Heer EM/NCO’s M42 overseas cap, constructed of field-grey wool. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down side panels, gently scalloped at the front, providing optional ear and neck protection to the wearer in the style of an M43 visor cap. When not in use, the panels are rolled up and secured in place at the front with two pebbled magnetic metal buttons emanating from the right flap and meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. It is flanked on each side by a ventilation hole, each reinforced with grey-painted magnetic metal grommets. Stitched onto the peak of the cap is an insignia consisting of a field-grey rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered grey Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 70 mm (w) x 28 mm (h) overall. Directly underneath the eagle is an additional insignia consisting of a field-grey rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered tri-colour cockade, measuring 35 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece cotton/rayon-blended slate-grey liner, which bears a size mark of “56” stamped onto the crown in black ink. It measures approximately 295 mm (l) x 120 mm (h) when folded onto a flat surface. Minor interior soiling is evident, but the cap demonstrates no other apparent issues and is in an overall extremely fine condition.
