Germany, Wehrmacht. A Rare Chaplain Officer’s Visor Cap, by August Müller

(Wehrmacht Schirmmütze für Geistlicher). A rare and extremely well-preserved Wehrmacht Chaplain Officer’s visor cap, constructed of smooth field-grey whipcord wool. The cap features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a dark green doeskin wool cap band. Violet piping trims both the top and bottom edges of the cap band, with an additional band of identical piping set around the crown. Pinned onto the peak of the cap is an insignia in the form of an aluminum Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 26 mm (h). Set into the cap just underneath the eagle is a silvered bronze knotted Greek Cross, measuring 16 mm (w) x 20 mm (h). The centre of the cap band bears an additional insignia consisting of a non-ferrous metal tricolour cockade with a red wool centrepiece, set within an aluminum oak leaf wreath. This insignia measures 65 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. Pebbled aluminum buttons flank each side of the cap band, and secure in place a decorative chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. The chinstrap is adjusted with dual sliding knots of identical construction and rests upon a protruding black vulcanfibre visor, the latter securely affixed to the cap with a row of machine stitching. A black leather sweatband measuring 45 mm in width encompasses the lower circumference of the interior. It is fully encompassed by a golden-brown rayon liner, with a transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard stitched onto the crown. The guard retains a fully-intact black ink maker’s mark of “AUG. MÜLLER, MÜNCHEN”, indicating high-quality private manufacture. It measures approximately 240 mm (w) x 255 mm (l) x 170 mm (h). A small piece of the moisture guard has been lost near the name tag insertion slot and minor soiling is evident to the interior, but this rare cap is in an overall extremely fine condition.
