Germany, DRK. A Red Cross Official’s Visor Cap
(Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Schirmmütze). A German Red Cross (DRK) official’s visor cap, constructed of dark grey wool twill. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a smooth light grey wool cap band. The latter is trimmed along both the top and bottom edges with light grey wool piping, with an additional band of identical piping fully surrounding the crown. Pinned onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a DRK-style German national eagle, overlaid by a mobile swastika and clutching a Geneva Cross. The eagle measures 20 mm (w) x 30 mm (h) and is constructed of bronze with multi-coloured enamels. Pinned onto the centre of the cap band just underneath the eagle is a non-ferrous metal tricolour cockade within an aluminum oak leaf wreath. The cockade and wreath measures 65 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. The cap band is also flanked on each side by black magnetic metal buttons securing in place a black leather chinstrap, itself adjusted by dual black magnetic metal buckles. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding pressed black leather visor, securely stitched into the structure of the cap. A 36 mm-wide brown leather sweatband surrounder the interior, which also features a brown rayon-blended liner. It is unmarked with the exception of a black letter “B” stamped onto the crown. The cap measures approximately 250 mm (w) x 255 mm (l) x 135 mm (h). Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include material fatigue of the wool and leather elements, cracking and loss of enamel to the badge, and evidence of insignia replacement. It is in an overall very fine condition.
