Germany, Heer. A Visor Cap for a Combat Engineer Officer in Mountain Troops Service

(Heer Schirmmütze für Kampfpionier im Gebirgsjägerregiment). A well-preserved, converted visor cap for an Engineer Officer attached to a Gebirgsjäger (Mountain Troops) unit, constructed of field-grey wool. The cap features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a smooth dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with black wool piping, while an additional band of identical piping trims the outer edge of the cap band. Pinned onto the peak is an aluminum insignia consisting of a Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 64 mm (w) x 25 mm (h). Directly below the eagle, the peak is also pinned with an edelweiss constructed of partially-gilded aluminum, measuring 30 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). The centre of the cap band is in turn pinned with an aluminum oak leaf wreath surrounding a tri-colour cockade with a wool centrepiece, measuring 60 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). Pebbled magnetic metal buttons flanked the cap band, retaining a chinstrap constructed of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. Completing the exterior features is a protruding vulcanfibre visor finished in glossed black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse, notably demonstrating lines from a previous Enlisted ranks leatherette chinstrap, replaced with the existing wire feature upon the wearer’s elevation to Officer. A brown leather sweatband fully lined the interior, which is encompassed by a brown rayon-blended liner. The crown retains a fully-intact transparent plastic moisture guard with a hollow slot for the insertion of a name tag, covering a size mark of “54 ½”. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include minor wear of the exterior features with moderate soiling and material fatigue of the interior. An interesting converted Officer’s cap in better than very fine condition.
