Germany, HJ. A Winter Service Cap
(HJ Wintermütze). An extremely well-preserved HJ winter service cap, constructed of thick dark navy blue wool. It is fully surrounded by fold-down side panels, scalloped at the front, offering optional ear and neck protection to the wearer. When not in use, the panels are rolled up and secured in place at the front with a silvered bronze buckle and sliding wool knot, with one strap featuring two magnetic metal-reinforced eyelets for an adjustable fit. Unusually, the cap features dual insignia, including a polished aluminum Sturmabteilung- (SA) style eagle affixed to the peak with dual reverse attachment prongs. The eagle measures 36 mm (w) x 26 mm (h) overall. Pinned underneath the eagle is an enameled HJ badge, marked on the reverse with a RZM logo and maker code “M1/6” for Karl Hensler, Pforzheim. The insignia measures 14 mm (w) x 24 mm (h). Completing the exterior features is a protruding cardboard-reinforced visor, fully lined in identical wool. A padded, panelled, black rayon liner fully encompasses the interior. Stitched onto the right side of the liner is a fully-intact RZM label bearing a secondary code of “324598”. The cap measures approximately 195 mm (w) x 255 mm (l) x 110 mm (h). With only fatigue of the exterior wool evident, it is in an extremely fine condition.
