Germany, Luftwaffe. A Flight Personnel EM/NCO’s Visor Cap
(Luftwaffe Schirmmütze für Männer der Fliegertruppe). A Luftwaffe Flight Personnel EM/NCO’s visor cap, constructed of heavy dark grey-blue wool. The cap features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a ribbed black mohair cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are trimmed with golden-yellow wool piping, while an additional band of identical piping lines the outer edge of the crown. The latter has had its interior reinforcement removed, giving the cap a crusher-style appearance with a striking high peak. Affixed to the peak is an aluminum insignia consisting of a Luftwaffe eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle measures 65 mm (w) x 40 mm (h) and retains both of its reverse attachment prongs. Also pinned onto the cap band directly beneath the eagle is an additional aluminum insignia consisting of a central tri-colour cockade within an oak leaf wreath, in turn flanked on each side by stylized wings. The cap band insignia measures 130 mm (w) x 40 mm (h) overall. It is flanked on each side by blackened magnetic metal rivets which secure in place a multi-piece black leatherette chinstrap, adjusted with dual functional magnetic metal buckles. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in a matte black on the obverse and in a matte dark green on the reverse. A brown leather sweatband lined the interior edge of the cap band, measuring 48 mm in width. The interior is also fully encompassed by a brown rayon liner, formerly retaining a rhomboid moisture guard on the crown, which has since been lost to time. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 235 mm (w) x 270 mm (l) x 160 mm (h). Issues consistent with age and field use are evident throughout the cap, and include significant material fatigue to the exterior wool, some resulting from soiling with an adhesive, with additional fatigue of the leather features, and wear and soiling of the interior liner. This experienced cap is in an overall fair condition.
