Germany, Luftwaffe. A Luftwaffe Flak/Artillery NCO’s Visor Cap, by G.A. Hoffmann
(Luftwaffe Schirmmütze). A very well-preserved and unit-attributed Luftwaffe Flak/Artillery NCO’s visor cap. Constructed of smooth dark grey wool, it features a ribbed black cotton-blended cap band over reinforced side walls. Band of red piping fully surround both the crown and the top and bottom edges of the cap band. Pinned onto the peak of the cap is an insignia consisting of a Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika. Constructed of aluminum, the eagle measures 65 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Underneath the eagle, the cap band bears an insignia in the form of a tricolour wreath set within an integrated oak leaf wreath, flanked by stylized wings. The cap band insignia is constructed of aluminum and measures 135 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). It is flanked on each side by blackened magnetic metal rivets securing in place a black leather chinstrap, itself adjusted with two magnetic metal buckles. When not in use, the chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor. The visor presents with a lacquered black finish on the obverse and with a matte green reverse. The interior features a 42 mm-wide light brown leather sweatband, securely held in place with a row of machine stitching and perforated by an array of ventilation holes near the forehead. A two-piece cotton-blended liner fully encompasses the interior. Stitched onto the crown is a transparent plastic moisture guard. Underneath the moisture guard is a silver maker’s mark of “G.A. HOFFMANN, BERLIN”, with a black stamped date of “1937” and size of “56 ½”. Notably, the sweatband folds down to reveal a stamped unit attribution of “I./FLAK-REGT. 26, 14. BATTR.”. The cap measures approximately 255 mm (w) x 250 mm (l) x 165 mm (h). While very well-preserved, the cap demonstrates some issue consisting with age and wear, including material fatigue of the chinstrap and visor, as well as soiling of the sweatband. It is in an overall better than very fine condition.
