Germany, Luftwaffe. A Winter Field Cap
(Luftwaffe Wintermütze). A well-preserved Luftwaffe winter field cap, constructed of coarse dark blue-grey wool. It consists of a pillbox-style central cylinder featuring a one-piece flap which emanates from the sides and reverse. The flap is lined on the exterior with slate-grey wool, and features ear flaps which, when not in use, meet at the crown and are secured together with white cotton drawstrings. An additional flap of identical construction is affixed to the forehead and remains raised under its own gravity. The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece blue-grey cotton/rayon-blended liner, with the crown bearing an intact but illegible maker’s mark in stamped black ink. The cap measures approximately 23 cm (w) x 15 cm (h). The eagle insignia which formerly adorned the peak flap has been removed, but the cap demonstrates no evident damage or wear and is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
