Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Visor Cap
(Luftwaffe Schirmmütze für Offiziere). An officer’s visor cap, constructed of dark grey whipcord wool. It features reinforced sidewalls, fully lined on the exterior with a ribbed black rayon cap band. The cap band is trimmed along both the top and bottom edges with silver aluminum wire piping, while an additional band of identical piping trims the edge of the crown. Stitched onto the peak of the cap is an insignia consisting of a dark grey wool base bearing a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika. The eagle insignia measures 55 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Flanking each side of the cap band are pebbled and silvered buttons securing in place a decorative chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. It rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in a matte black on the obverse and in dark green on the reverse. The interior features a brown leather sweatband measuring 45 mm in width, perforated with an array of ventilation holes along the forehead. A golden-brown rayon liner encompasses the interior, with a transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard stitched onto the crown. The cap is fully unmarked and measures approximately 235 mm (w) x 260 mm (l) x 185 mm (h). Some issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include slight material fatigue of the exterior wool with a patch of mothing visible to the rear of the crown, some deterioration of the visor and sweatband, and soiling of the interior liner. Additionally, the eagle insignia demonstrates signs of possible period replacement. The cap is in an overall very fine condition.
