Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Visor Cap
(Schirmmütze für Offizier der Luftwaffe). A Luftwaffe Officer’s visor cap, constructed of dark grey whipcord wool. It features reinforced side walls, fully lined on the exterior with a ribbed black mohair cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the cap band are lined with bands of silver aluminum wire piping, while an additional band of identical piping trims the exterior edge of the crown. Stitched onto the peak of the cap is an insignia consisting of a dark grey wool backer bearing a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). Stitched onto the centre of the cap band directly beneath the eagle is an additional insignia consisting of a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire tri-colour cockade with a red wool centrepiece, set within an oak leaf wreath and stylized wings of identical construction. The cap band insignia measures 140 mm (w) x 45 mm (h) overall. Flanking the cap band are pebbled magnetic metal buttons which secure in place a decorative chinstrap, constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire and adjusted with dual functional sliding knots. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, which is finished in black on both the obverse and reverse. The interior of the side walls is fully lined with a period replacement pebbled black leather sweatband, while the interior is also encompassed by a cotton/rayon blended liner. A partially-intact transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard is retained by the crown. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 230 mm (w) x 240 mm (l) x 150 mm (h). In addition to evidence of sweatband replacement, issues consisting with age and use are evident, and include material fatigue to the insignia (particularly the peak eagle), fatigue of the interior, and distortion of the side wall reinforcement. The cap is in an overall very fine condition.
