Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Visor Cap
(Luftwaffe Schirmmütze für Offiziere). A well-preserved Luftwaffe Officer’s visor cap, constructed of classic blue-grey wool in a whipcord weave. It features reinforced side walls, with the exterior bearing a smooth black wool cap band. Silver aluminum piping fully surrounds the circumference of the crown, with two additional bands of identical piping surrounding both the top and bottom of the cap band. Stitched onto the centre of the cap band is an insignia in the form of a padded black wool backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire oak leaf wreath, surrounding a tri-colour cockade, and flanked by wings of identical construction. The insignia measures 140 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). It is flanked on each side by pebbled magnetic metal buttons, securing in place a decorative chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding vulcanfibre visor, the obverse of which presents with a lacquered black finish and the reverse in a light brown. A light brown leather sweatband fully encompasses the interior, and is held in place by a row of machine stitching. It also features a complete liner, constructed of golden-brown rayon, with a black ink size stamp of “56” still visible on the crown. The sweatband folds down to reveal a fully intact Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) label with a maker’s code of “4” and a secondary code of “360068”. The cap measures approximately 235 mm (w) x 260 mm (l) x 170 mm (h). While structurally well-preserved, the cap demonstrated some issues consisting with age and use, including the loss of the peak eagle insignia and the interior moisture guard, along with some soiling and material fatigue of the interior. It is in an overall very fine condition.
