Germany, Ordnungspolizei. An NCO’s Bergmütze
(Bergmütze für Unteroffizier der Ordnungspolizei). A well-preserved Ordnungspolizei NCO’s Bergmütze (mountain cap), constructed of field-grey wool. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down side panels, with frontal scalloping, providing optional ear and neck protection for the wearer. When not in use, the panels are rolled up and secured in place with a pebbled field-grey zink button meeting on the right flap meeting a reinforced buttonhole on the left flap. Stitched onto the peak of the cap is an insignia consisting of a machine-embroidered tricolour cockade measuring 24 mm in diameter. Underneath the eagle is an additional insignia consisting of a black rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, on top of an oval oak leaf wreath. The eagle insignia measures 45 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). A protruding cardboard-reinforced visor, fully lined with field-grey wool, completes the exterior features. The interior is fully encompassed by an olive-drab rayon-blended liner. It is unmarked with the exception of a black ink size stamp of “59” on the crown. The cap measures approximately 190 mm (w) x 285 mm (l) x 150 mm (h). It demonstrates some issues consistent with age and field use, including fatigue of the wire of the eagle insignia, cracking of the cardboard visor reinforcement, and slight fatigue to the wool along high-contact points. The cap is in an overall better than very fine condition.
