Germany, Third Reich. A Volunteer Firefighter Officer’s Visored Field Cap
(Einheitsfeldmütze für einen Offizier der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr). An extremely well-preserved Volunteer Firefighter Officer’s visored field cap, constructed of dark navy blue wool. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down side panels, scalloped toward the front, providing optional ear and neck protection to the wearer. When not in use, the panels are rolled up and secured in place at the front with two pebbled and black-painted buttons which emanate from the right panel and meet an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left. A band of silver aluminum wire piping trims the outer edge of the crown. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a dark blue rayon hexagon bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey Ordnungspolizei insignia topped by a tri-colour cockade. The peak insignia measures 50 mm (w) x 55 mm (h). Completing the exterior features is a protruding visor with a card stock core fully lined in identical wool. The interior is encompassed by a multi-piece grey rayon liner which is stamped on the crown with a black ink size mark of “55”, while a slate-grey leather sweatband extends across the forehead and bears an embossed inscription of “QUALITÄTS MARKE”, The cap measures approximately 21 cm (w) x 24 cm (l) x 13 cm (h). Moderate material fatigue is visible to the sweatband, with some minor soiling evident to the interior liner, but the cap demonstrates no notable damage and remains in a near extremely fine condition.
