Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Senior NCO’s Visor Cap, by Fritz Weidmann
(Kriegsmarine Schirmmütze). A very well-preserved Kriegsmarine Senior NCO’s visor cap, constructed of dark blue wool. The cap features reinforced side walls, with the exterior bearing a woven black cotton twill cap band. Stitched onto the peak of the cap is an insignia in the form of a dark blue wool backer bearing a hand-embroidered gold bullion wire Kriegsmarine eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle insignia measures 70 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). Underneath the eagle, the centre of the cap features an additional insignia constructed of padded dark blue wool, bearing a hand-embroidered tricolour cockade within a gold bullion wire oak leaf wreath. The wreath and cockade measures 75 mm (w) x 65 mm (h) overall. It is flanked on each side by gilded magnetic metal buttons, each of which bears a raised fouled anchor. The buttons secured in place a black leather chinstrap, itself with two leather buckles and a functional magnetic metal snap button. When not in use, the chinstrap rests upon a protruding lacquered black vulcanfibre visor, securely set into the structure of the cap. The interior features a light brown leather sweatband measuring 40 mm in width, and a complete black rayon liner. Stitched onto the crown is a transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard. The latter bears a maker’s mark of “FRITZ WEIDMANN, KÜFERSTR. 20-24”, topped by the Kiel-based firm’s logo. The cap measures 260 mm (w) x 270 mm (l) x 155 mm (h). Minor material fatigue is evident, including warping of the side walls and visor. The cap is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
