Germany, Reichsbahn. A National Railway M43 Field Cap, by Otto Wesely
(Reichsbahn M43 Einheitsfeldmütze). This is an extremely well-preserved Reichsbahn (National Railway) M43 field cap, constructed of dark blue wool. The cap features fold-down side panels providing neck protection which, when not in use, are secured to the cap by two gilded zink buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left. Both buttons are maker marked on the reverse with the logo of Gebrüder Schneider, Wien. Stitched into the peak of the cap is a rayon patch bearing a machine-embroidered gold German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, above a tri-colour cockade, measuring 45 mm (w) x 48 mm (h). The interior features a 30 mm-wide brown leather sweatband securely held in place by a row of machine stitching. A black padded cotton interior liner is stamped at the top with a maker’s mark of “OTTO WESELY, KAPPENFABRIK, WIEN VI”, along with a size of “57”. The cap measures approximately 160 mm (w) x 260 mm (l) x 110 mm (h). With the exception of some cracking and fatigue to the sweatband, the cap is in an extremely fine condition.
