Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Infantry EM/NCO’s M40 Overseas Cap
(Waffen-SS Schiffchen). An extremely well-preserved Waffen-SS Infantry EM/NCO’s M40 overseas cap, constructed of field-grey wool twill. The cap is fully surrounded by reinforced fold-down side panels. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia constructed of a black rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle insignia measures 30 mm (w) x 60 mm (w) overall. Just underneath the eagle, the cap features an additional insignia in the form of a black rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey Totenkopf, with razor-sharp details in black machine embroidery and measuring 35 mm (w) x 32 mm (h). Circumscribing the Totenkopf is a white wool soutache, set through the reverse of the panels in classic style, indicating Infantry personnel. The interior features a complete olive-drab cotton-blended liner, which presents plain with the exception of a black ink size stamp of “58”. It is otherwise unmarked and measures approximately 275 mm (l) x 125 mm (h) when folded. The cap displays only minor material fatigue, and is in an overall extremely fine condition.
