Germany, SS. A Waffen-SS Infantry Officer’s Crusher Cap
(Waffen-SS Feldmütze). A well-preserved Waffen-SS Infantry Officer’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool twill. The cap is fully surrounded by a black wool cap band, trimmed at both the top and bottom with white threaded piping, with an additional band of white piping surrounding the crown. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia in the former of a field-grey cotton backer bearing a machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The eagle measures 60 mm (w) x 28 mm (h). Pinned into the cap underneath the eagle is a tombak insignia in the form of a SS-style Totekopf. Measuring 30.22 mm (w) x 28.60 mm (h), the Totenkopf retains one of its two reverse attachment prongs and is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M1/52” for Deschler & Sohn, Munich. The exterior features of the cap are completed by a protruding visor, constructed of field-grey wool with internal cardboard reinforcement. The interior circumference is fully surrounded by a 30 mm-wide ersatz brown leather sweatband. A field-grey cotton-blended liner encompasses the interior. The cap is unmarked and measures approximately 220 mm (w) x 255 mm (l) x 155 mm (h). While well-preserved, the cap displays some issues consisting with age and field use, including minor material fatigue of the wool, deterioration of the eagle insignia, loss of finish to the Totenkopf, and material fatigue of the sweatband. The cap is in an overall better than very fine condition.
