Germany, SS. An Allgemeine SS M34 EM/NCO’s Visor Cap
(Allgemeine SS Tuchmütze). This is an extremely well-preserved Allgemeine SS EM/NCO’s visor cap, constructed of smooth black gabardine wool. The crown of the cap is fully lined by a band of white piping, while the cap band, similarly constructed of black gabardine wool, is also trimmed at both the top and bottom with white piping. Pinned into the peak of the cap is a first form (1921-1936) Hoheitszeichen (SS Eagle). The eagle is constructed of silvered bronze and measures 36 mm (w) x 28 mm (h). Pinned into the centre of the cap band underneath the eagle is a first form (1923-1934) Totenkopf (Death’s Head), constructed of silvered bronze and measuring 33 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). Pinned into the right of the cap is an unofficial adornment in the form of a Hochland-style edelweiss, constructed of gilded and silvered bronze with a black enameled mobile swastika centerpiece, which measures 40 mm (w) x 38 mm (h). The cap is flanked by blackened magnetic metal buttons which hold in place a leather chinstrap, constructed of two lengths of blackened leather with magnetic metal buckles, joined together at the middle by a magnetic metal loop. The exterior features are completed by a protruding black leather visor which is securely stitched into the structure of the cap. The interior bears a 35 mm-wide brown leather sweatband fully lining the circumference, held in place by a row of machine stitching. The interior has a complete brown rayon liner, the top of which bears a transparent celluloid rhombus moisture guard, underneath which is a stamped gold SS insignia. In front of the insignia is a black ink size stamp of “54”. Stitched into the interior side wall is a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) label bearing an illegible manufacturer’s code and a legible serial number of “599297”. The cap measures approximately 227 mm (w) x 240 mm (l) x 145 mm (h). Minor material fatigue is evident to the leather features, and there is some tarnishing of the insignia, and the cap is in a near extremely fine condition.
