A Rare 1813 Prussian Battle of Leipzig Cross - Berlin blackened iron with silver caps affixed on the end of each of the arms, plus silver oval centrepieces affixed to both sides, obverse inscribed with the month and year of the battle, "OCT: 1813." on the oval centrepiece, the caps inscribed with the days of the battle: "16. , 17., 18., 19." respectively, clockwise from the upper arm, reverse inscribed "HEIL DEN" (The Healing) on the oval centrepiece, the caps inscribed with the victorious countries: "RU:" (Russia), "OE:" (Austria), "PR:" (Prussia), "SC:" (Sweden) respectively, clockwise from the upper arm, small suspension loop attached to the upper arm, 37.5 mm x 38.6 mm, contact marks and surface wear, very fine. Footnote: The Battle of Leipzig or Battle of the Nations was fought by the coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden, led by the Russian Czar Alexander I against the French army of Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, at Leipzig, Saxony. Napoleon's army also contained Polish and Italian troops, as well as Germans from the Confederation of the Rhine. The battle marked the culmination of the autumn campaign of 1813 during the German campaign and involved over 600,000 soldiers, making it the largest battle in Europe prior to the First World War. Being decisively defeated for the first time in battle, Napoleon was compelled to return to France while the Coalition hurried to keep their momentum, invading France early the next year. Napoleon was forced to abdicate and was exiled to Elba in May 1814.
