Anhalt, Duchy. An Order of Albert the Bear, Merit Medal, Prototype
(Verdienstmedaille Albrecht des Bären, Verdienstmedaille Prototyp). Instituted 18 November 1836 by by Heinrich, Duke of Anhalt-Köthen, Leopold IV, Duke of Anhalt-Dessau, and Alexander Karl, Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg. Constructed of bronze, the obverse depicting a central crowned bear on top of a fortress wall, circumscribed by an inscription of “FUERCHTE GOTT UND BEFOLGE SEINE BEFEHLE” (“FEAR GOD AND OBEY HIS COMMANDMENTS”), the reverse with a central crown Anhalt coat of arms, circumscribed by an inscription of “ALBRECHT DER BAER, REG. 1123-1170” (“ALBERT THE BEAR, KING 1123-1170”), measuring 31.50 mm in diameter, weighing 13.0 grams, a prototype strike in near extremely fine condition.
