(Orden von Zähringer Löwen Bruststern mit Schwertern). Instituted on 26 December 1812 by Karl, Grand Duke of Baden. Issue 1866-1918. An ornate star consisting of four arms, each composed of a cluster of individual rays, with arabesques in each quadrant, a Gold cross centre featuring four green enameled arms with ribbed borders, obverse central medallion presenting the hand painted ruins of the “Stammschloss Zähringen”, red enameled surround with hand filed Motto in Gold “FÜR EHRE UND WAHRHEIT” (“FOR HONOUR AND TRUTH”), with crossed gilt swords, reverse with principle pin assembly with distinctive flat pin, with four screw posts, makers mark Zuber denoting manufacture by Joseph Zuber (1858-1877), measuring 87.37 mm (w) x 87.2 mm (h), 51.4 grams, with enamel loss to red surround and laurels, crack and flake to green 12 o'clock arm, with contact, remains fine. Footnote: A total number 256 Commander with swords were issued.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
