Baden, Grand Duchy. An Order of the Zähringer Lion, I Class Knight’s Cross in Gold, c.1890
(Orden vom Zähringer Löwe, Ritterkreuz I. Klasse in Gold). Instituted 26 December 1812 by Grand Duke Karl Friedrich. (1815-1918). Constructed of Gold with enamels, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a Gold frame, its quadrants joined together by detailed arabesques, the obverse arms bearing rounded emerald green stones, with a central enameled disc featuring a hand-painted depiction of the Zähringer estate tower, the reverse bearing a central red enameled medallion bearing a Gold Zähringer lion rampant, unmarked, measuring 36.88 mm (w) x 40.37 mm (h), weighing 14.2 grams, minor scratching and tarnishing is evident to the stones and Gold and gilded features, in near extremely fine condition.
