Baden, Grand Duchy. A Field Service Medal, for Franco-Prussian War Service
(Felddienst-Auszeichnung). Instituted 27 January 1839 by Grand Duke Leopold. (1839-1871 issue). Constructed of bronzed copper, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with “1870” clasp indicating issue for Franco-Prussian War service, the obverse bearing a raised Baden griffin clutching a sword and shield bearing the Grand Duchy’s coat of arms, topped by an inscription of “FÜR BADENS EHRE” (“FOR BADEN’S HONOUR”), the reverse bearing a wreathed inscription of “LEOPOLD FÜR TREUEN DIENST IM KRIEGE” (“LEOPOLD - FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE IN WAR”), unmarked, measuring 31.33 mm in diameter, weighing 22.4 grams (inclusive of ribbon and clasp), in better than very fine condition.
