Bavaria, Kingdom. A Dress Sabre, by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co.
(Säbel). A well-preserved Bavarian commemorative dress sabre, measuring 95.6 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features an 81 cm-long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and unspoiled edges. Each side of the blade features a fuller which runs approximately three quarters of the length. Acid-etched onto the obverse is a Bavarian motto of “IN TREUE FEST!” (“STEADFAST IN LOYALTY!”), flanked by oak leaves and a Bavarian coat of arms. The reverse bears an identical motto, flanked by oak leaves and set within an elongated oval laurel leaf wreath. Stamped into the obverse ricasso is a maker’s mark of “W.K.C.” for Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co., topped by the firm’s early logo of a king’s head and knight’s helmet. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated magnetic metal hilt, complete with hand guard, with the seam covered by a partially-intact buffer pad. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed black celluloid. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. It retains an integral loop near the throat for hanger suspension, while the throat also features a functional spring catch to firmly hold the sabre in place during storage. Minor tarnish and loss of finish is visible to the metal features, but the sabre remains in an overall extremely fine condition.
