Bavaria, Kingdom. A Fine Military Order of St. George, Grand Cross Star with 'Brilliance', c.1900
(Orden vom heiligen Georg, Bruststern zum Großkreuz). Instituted 20 March 1729 by Prince-Elector Karl Albrecht. (1729-1918 issue). Constructed of silver with synthetic gems, consisting of a Maltese Cross, the obverse featuring arms inset with synthetic sapphires and set within a pebbled border, joined together through the quadrants by rhombuses featuring synthetic sapphires and cut glass gems simulating white enamels, bearing a central medallion consisting of a field of cut glass gems overlaid by a St. George’s Cross executed in synthetic rose-pink gems, surrounded by a pebbled border, the reverse with four visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a raised barrel hinge and tapering banjo-style pinback meeting a round wire catch, flanked by stabilizers, unmarked, measuring 87.89 mm (w) x 88.07 mm (h), weighing 97.8 grams, demonstrating minor tarnishing, an unusual example in extremely fine condition.
