A fine example of a Bavarian Military Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords; in silvered copper and black and white enamels; maltese cross with crossed swords above the upper arm; the obverse with a circular central black enamel medallion with the cypher of King Ludwig III in silver, surrounded by a white enameled ring inscribed in silver letters “Merenti” (Merit); the reverse without enamels, bearing the Bavarian crowned lion circumscribed by a buckled belt dated “1866”; on a loop for suspension; with its shortened period original ribbon; measuring 49.50 mm x 41.47 mm; weighing 19.4 grams; accompanied by its original case of issue; constructed of a lightly textured faux leather (leatherette) exterior embossed with “Bayr. M. V. Kr. 2. Kl.” in silver lettering; lined interior lid with “Hofkunstanstalt Jacob Leser, Straubing” in golden lettering; recessed medal bed; fold over closure; intact interior fabric hinge cover; intact exterior metal hinge; measuring 88 mm x 60 mm; better than very fine condition.
