Bavaria, Kingdom. A Military Merit Cross, I Class with Swords
(Militärverdienstkreuz des MVO, I. Klasse mit Schwertern). Instituted 19 July 1866 by Ludwig II. (1905-1913 issue). Constructed of silver with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with pebbled arms, the obverse with a central medallion depicting a monogram of Ludwig II on a black enameled background, surrounded by a raised stylized belt and buckle bearing a silvered inscription of “MERENTI” (“MERIT”), the reverse with a central Bavarian lion rampant, surrounded by raised stylized belt and buckle bearing an institution date of “1866” with arabesques, the twelve o’clock arm with crossed swords, with a stylized integral suspension connecting to a loop and a period original ribbon, unmarked, measuring 42.28 mm (w) x 50.38 mm (h), weighing 19.5 grams, in near extremely fine condition.
