Bavaria, Kingdom. A Military Merit Cross Second Class, with Crown & Swords
(Bayerisches Militär-Verdienstkreuz, II. Klasse, mit Krone und Schwertern). A Silver Maltese cross with crossed Roman Swords; the obverse with a circular central black enameled medallion bearing a silver gilt crowned cipher of King Ludwig III, surrounded by a broad white enameled ring in the form of a buckled belt, inscribed “MERENTI” (Latin - Merit), in silver lettering; the reverse with a central black enameled medallion bearing a silver gilt crowned Bavarian lion within a white enameled border in the form of a buckled belt in silver gilt numbers, reading “1866”, suspended from a structure composed of arabesques with crossed silver swords, and a hollow crown and loop for suspension; measuring 42.25 mm (w) x 66.26 mm (h); weighing 25.7 grams. Mounted from a medal bar from its period original ribbon with a set of crossed swords attached to the obverse; in overall very fine condition.
