A Military Order of Max Joseph to Otto von Stetten; Cavalry Commander; (Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden), 1806-1922, in Gold and enamels, 30.00mm (x 44.56mm including crown suspension), weighs 7.7 grams (without ribbon), unmarked, of very fine quality manufacture, no chipping to enamels, in extremely fine condition; loop officially numbered “42”; early 19th Century cross, in excellent condition. Footnote: The Military Order of Max Joseph (German: Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden) was the highest purely military order of the Kingdom of Bavaria, founded on January 1 1806 by Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, the first king of Bavaria. The order came in three classes: Grand Cross, Commander’s Cross, and Knight; individuals who won the Order and were not already members of the nobility were ennobled and would add the title of "Ritter von" to their family name. The Order was seldom awarded; from 1806 until 1922, total of 766 Knight’s Crosses were awarded; further, knight’s crosses have been numbered from 1 to 451 only; towards the end of WWI, knight’s crosses were issued in silver gilt and eventually, in gilded copper. Very scarce award held in very high esteem. Footnote: Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden issue number 42 is confirmed and attributed to Otto von Stetten. The son of a valet de chambre, Otto von Stetten was born March 16, 1862 in Bamberg. At the outbreak of the First War he was made commander of a Cavalry Division on the Western Front. It was during this time he was awarded the Max Joseph Order. ( October 11, 1914 ) On November 5, 1914 he was moved to the administration of the II. Army Corps. in January 1917 he was made General of Cavalry. In April 1918 he was replaced by Konrad Krafft von Dellmensingen,.
