Bavaria, Kingdom. An Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown, Grand Cross Star, by Eduard Quellhorst, c.1890
(Verdienstorden der Bayerischen Krone, Bruststern zum Großkreuz). Instituted 19 March 1808 by Maximilian Joseph I. (1855-1918 issue). Constructed of silver and Gold with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of an pebbled eight-pointed radiant star, the obverse with a central blue and white enameled medallion bearing a Gold Bavarian crown, surrounded by a pebbled gilt ring, within a red enameled ring bearing a raised gilt inscription of “VIRTUS ET HONOS” (“VIRTUE AND HONOUR”) with gilt laurel leaves, within a finely-detailed gilt and green enameled oak leaf wreath, the reverse with a barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a round wire catch, maker marked “EDUARD QUELLHORST, JUWELIER U. GOLDARBEITER IN MÜNCHEN”, measuring 72.43 mm (w) x 71.33 mm (h), weighing 28.2 grams, minor flecking of enamels evident, with a small repair evident to the two o’clock arm, in overall extremely fine condition.
