Bavaria, Kingdom. A Royal Merit Order of St. Michael, IV Class with Crown, c. 1910
(Verdienstorden vom Heiligen Michael, IV. Klasse mit Krone). Instituted 16 February 1837 (IV Class with Crown instituted 1887). (1887-1918 issue). Constructed of silver with enamels, consisting of a Cross Pattée, the obverse overlaid by a silver medallion depicting St. Michael trampling the devil, clutching a shield bearing an enameled inscription of “QUIS UT DEUS” (“WHO IS LIKE GOD”), the reverse bearing a silvered medallion overlaid by an enameled inscription of “VIRTUTI”, the twelve o’clock arm featuring a swivel hinge and hollow silver crown suspension connecting to a period replacement ribbon, unmarked, measuring 36.05 mm (w) x 60.58 mm (h) (inclusive of suspension), weighing 20.8 grams, in extremely fine condition.
